  • BARBEQUE SAFETY Fire Kills campaign’s top tips you can ensure your barbecue is a safe, enjoyable event. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Never leave a lit barbecue unattended. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Follow the safety instructions provided with disposable barbecues. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Make sure your barbecue is well away from sheds, fences, trees, shrubs or garden waste. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Use enough charcoal to cover the base of the barbecue, but not more. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Keep children, pets and garden games away from the cooking area. ๐Ÿ”ฅ After cooking, make sure the barbecue is cool before moving it. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Empty ashes onto bare garden soil, not into dustbins or wheelie bins. If they’re hot, they can melt the plastic and cause a fire. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Enjoy yourself, but don’t drink too much alcohol if you are in charge of the barbecue. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Always keep a bucket of water, sand or a garden hose nearby for emergencies. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Never use a barbecue indoors. • This Bank Holiday weekend, Bedfordshire Police is urging people to remain vigilant and take steps to minimise their chances of becoming a victim of crime. Tips from the force include: ♦ Lock your doors and windows every time you leave the house ♦ Before you go out, is there anything outside your house that could be used to break in? Lock tools and ladders away in a shed ♦ Ensure your side gate is locked and that any fences surrounding your garden are in good condition ♦ Ensure your car keys are hidden out of sight and away from your letterbox ♦ If you’re heading away for the weekend, ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your home and report any suspicious activity via 101 ♦ Activate tracking devices on any new phones ♦ Mark any new equipment with UV property marking pens - property marking can’t prevent things being stolen, but can act as a deterrent and if found, can be returned to its rightful owner more quickly Posted on 27/05/2017. • WEIGHT LIMIT CONCERNS. From CBC, dated 23rd May: "The implementation of the weight limit and re-numbering will not be completed immediately following the opening of the A5-M1 link road. There is a large quantity of signing work to be carried out, which will take some time to compete and there are some elements that are not as well progressed as others. There will inevitably be a transitional period between the new roads being open and the weight limit signing being fully in place. At this stage, we don’t have a firm date for completion of the wider weight limit signage, however to reassure you the contractor appointed is progressing the work as quickly as possible." • Fly Tipping. From the minutes of a recent Chalgrave Parish Council meeting, "The PC recently wrote to CBC suggesting that fly tipping would reduce significantly if commercial land fill costs were removed. CBC has responded saying that they recognise the issue of fly tipping and its impact on the local environment. CBC’s new waste site at Thorn Turn will be installing a weigh bridge and will be taking commercial waste. The government dictates that there is a cost of £98 per tonne for landfill and CBC cannot pick up the cost of this on behalf of businesses without decimating the waste budget." source:  Posted on 25/05/2017. • Pavement Parking. The Department for Transport is now ‘examining pavement parking outside London’ as part of its cycling and walking investment strategy. The Local Government Association wants the DoT to act and give councils powers to enforce a ban, saying pavement parking is putting pedestrians at risk. "Outside of the capital, the situation is very different with drivers only prohibited from parking on double or single yellow lines or where local signs indicate pavement parking will cause an obstruction." COMMENT - Admirable suggestion, but how could it be enforced? Even a local councillor is among those who ignore double yellows at Hillborough Crescent, so why would anyone take any notice of any parking-on-kerb rules? Posted on 23/05/2017. • PARKSIDE DRIVE 16:45 - A newly realigned and rebuilt section of Parkside Drive has now opened. The 20mph section of the road connects the Woodside Link to the Parkside estate. In the past the route connected to Lewsey Farm as a pedestrian and cycle route only. And before that it was a bus only route until it attracted vandals and ceased as a bus route. The new road will mean more traffic on Parkside Drive, and fewer traffic movements on Park Road North and Windsor Drive. ◘ A hedgerow that was incorrectly removed at the start of the scheme has still to be reinstated. ◘ Cyclists - Have you any concerns about the positioning of new dropped kerbs, or any other pathway between Leagrave and Houghton Regis? • At long last the A5-M1 link is open, and together with the #WoodsideLink, it means that traffic will no longer have to come through Houghton Regis town centre when the M1 is shut. So it's a day to rejoice! Already Houghton Regis town centre is feeling as quiet as it was when they closed Poynters Road for reconstruction for 11 weeks four years ago. It also means that a significant amount of former through traffic no longer needs to come through the town. The air quality in Houghton Regis town centre should improve immensely. HGVs will be banned from Park Road North, Sundon Road, and Bedford Rd, unless they are dropping goods off in Houghton Regis. No longer will traffic need to zig-zag from M1 J11, through Poynters Rd, and Bidwell, to get to Leighton Linslade, and vice versa. Instead it will be able to come off at M1 junction 11a, turn onto the new A5 and zoom along the dual carriageway at 70mph to the A505. The new link road will be known as the A5. Local roads will be renumbered and reclassified. As such, the road through Dunstable High Streets will become the responsibility of Central Bedfordshire Council, rather than Highways England. So that means the local council can have more of a say on what treatment that road should have. Perhaps a roundabout at Brewers Hill Rd/High St North? Perhaps a double roundabout at High St North/West Street (all subject to feasibility studies, of course). And a new road is already in the planning to take traffic from the new M1 J11a across to the A6; CBC already have £35m towards that. The new link-road has cost some £162m, of which developers of the HRN1 scheme have contributed £45m. The HRN1 scheme was for 5,150 new homes, so that is an average cost, which developers will need to load onto new home-owners, of £8,700 each. And these new folk will expect further public services, schools, library, doctors surgeries that will also need to be funded. The next steps ahead will see construction of new places of work, new homes, new schools, and new recreation places. Stay tuned to Houghton Regis News Desk to keep up with all that's going on! • Twenty five new officers officially joined Bedfordshire Police on Monday after a Passing out Parade at Headquarters. The officers have completed 16 weeks of training and will now begin their two year probation period, working with experienced officers in response, community policing and in the force’s Emerald Team which is dedicated to tackling domestic crime and serious sexual offences. They are the second group of new officers to graduate this year; the first group of 28 passed out at the end of March, and are currently working across the county. A further 42 officers are currently in training and will pass out at the end of August 2017. In total, the force will welcome around 96 new officers to the force in 2017, with a third from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) backgrounds as part of a drive by the force to be more reflective of the communities it serves. T/Assistant Chief Constable Jackie Sebire, who congratulated the officers at their Passing Out Parade, said: “We are really pleased to welcome these new officers to the force – they have all worked incredibly hard to get to this point and should feel really proud of themselves. “They will now work across the county, providing an additional policing presence across our busy towns and rural villages. This is an exciting time for policing, and although we face many challenges we are committed to protecting the public and keeping our communities safe.” Posted on 09/05/2017. • This is the tree that is going to be partially cut down and made into a totem, if planners get the permission they want. Tree is protected by TPO. PLANS:  PUBLIC NOTICE:  "Surveyors Report: 4.0 Recommendations From Tree Surveyor - Management options for the tree are as follows: ◘ A. Remove tree within 12 months to ground level, or retain standing stem only ◘ B. Monitor progress of wood decay at stem base, and at higher levels, by further testing with similar diagnostic devices, commencing in two years' time ◘ C. Limit or exclude access to area within which the tree could potentially fall. Given the prominence of the subject tree in the landscape option B. would be our preferred option." Houghton Hall Park Management Team have applied for the tree to be cut now (Option A), saying : "A play trail is being built adjacent and due to the decay fungus this tree has severe decline, stem failure and brittle fracture. Therefore due to safety this tree would need to be cut, only leaving part of the trunk. The trunk would then be made into a totem pole so as to create a focal point and further enhance the children's play area." • 20 ... 30 ... 40 ... 50 ... Driver Alert! Police are reminding motorists of the consequences of speeding as part of a week-long Europe-wide campaign. From Monday (17 April) officers from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit (RPU) have been out in force looking for motorists breaking the law. The week of action is the latest Tispol (European Traffic Police Network) speed enforcement campaign. The campaign aims to encourage police forces across Europe to enforce speed limits for all vehicles and raise public awareness of the consequences of speeding. Speeding is one of the fatal four driving offences. Speeding or travelling too fast for the road conditions accounts for 11 per cent of all collisions on Britain’s roads and 23 per cent of all fatalities. Those caught speeding risk a large fine and, in some cases, loss of license. Casualty reduction officer PC Jon Morris said: “We want all motorists to be aware that the speed limit on a road is just that, a limit not a target, so to drive sensibly for the road conditions they face. “The consequences of speeding can be deadly so drivers need to take care on the roads all year round.” Posted on 18/04/2017. Chairs of various Town Council meetings reported back on their activities over the past year, and invited questions and gave answers. Part of the meeting was given over to people to raise general questions. There was a query on the early closing of the Community Centre due to security issues that seems to be affecting some local users. An awareness was raised about the Chalk Quarry now being without management funding, doubtless many of those present were already aware, so that matter rested there. Drivers are reminded of the importance of watching out for bikers and to always look carefully when pulling out of junctions, manoeuvring and changing lanes. “We want the roads to be a safe place for everyone and ask that all road users help us to achieve this.” Posted on 14/04/2017. The incident is now being investigated by the police and has been reported to the Financial Conduct Authority. Wonga has updated their website with further information and confirmed that they are contacting all those affected and are taking steps to protect them, but there are also some things you can do to keep your information secure.  Here’s what you can do to make yourself safer: If any of your financial details were compromised, notify your bank or card company as soon as possible. Review your financial statements regularly for any unusual activity. Criminals can use personal data obtained from a data breach to commit identity fraud. Consider using credit reference agencies, such as Experian or Equifax, to regularly monitor your credit file for unusual activity. Be suspicious of any unsolicited calls, emails or texts, even if it appears to be from a company you know of. Don’t open the attachments or click on links within unsolicited emails, and never disclose any personal or financial details during a cold call. • POLICING MESSAGES FROM KATHRYN HOLLOWAY Beds Police and Crime Commissioner has been busy sending out a series of messages on Twitter this evening. Is there a message here for you?
  •  ◘ In Bedfordshire it is mandatory for a burgled householder to be visited by a police officer - so no exceptions then. It's the Force protocol.
  • ◘ If your home is burgled report this on 101 unless it's a burglary in progress when you should call 999. You'll be given a crime no & a visit
  • ◘ The facts are that there've been 8.5 house burglaries a day across a 670,000 population 2016-17. No comfort if you're a victim of course.
  • ◘ Two individuals @Bedspolice believe to be prolific burglars behind much of a spate of burglaries in Luton were arrested last night
  • ◘ Not underestimating the trauma of a single home burglary - a genuine priority of @Bedspolice now driven down to 8.5 a day for whole county
  • ◘ 1/3rd of our last recruits & a third of the next intake are from diverse backgrounds so @Bedspolice looks & sounds like the public we serve
  • ◘ Congratulations to every single one of the new PCs who passed out today to serve every one of our communities. See you out there soon!
  • ◘ With 30-34% of today's & last new PCs @Bedspolice from BME backgrounds this is unheard of in policing in UK - a genuine policy not tokenism Posted on 31/03/2017. Served to 2090 unique users. Facebook Link
